The Evolution of Suspenders.
Since the olden days, men needed to keep their trousers and pants up, and suspenders provided this. The suspenders were attached to trousers using buttonholes since they were made of ribbon strips. Back then they were worn as undergarments, and it was never heard of to spot them, as that was a sign of outright indecency, so they had to be concealed underneath other pieces of clothing.
It is in the nineteenth century that braces (modern day suspenders) were introduced. They were manufactured and designed by Albert Thurston. They were attached with leather loops. The suspenders come in various designs. However the categorization of these belts is dependent on two things; according to the shape formed at the back and the method of attachment. The oldest design by shape formed at the back was the H-suspenders where braces joined to form what the letter H at the back. There has been an evolution in the designs of the suspenders from those forming an H, to an X and later to a Y. The second type of categorization was dependent according to their attachment to the trousers and the earliest designs were attached using buttons. Later, leather loops were used to make an attachment to the trousers using buttonholes and finally, suspenders were attached to trousers by use of metal clasps.
Materials used to make them has also changed over time. for instance the materials used have evolved from ribbons to woven wool. This material was also known as box cloth. The different kinds of materials did not matter because all the suspenders served one main purpose of holding the trouser up. Belts were not familiar because the fashion trend that was there then involved wearing very high waist trousers The trousers were high-waist that belts could not be used; only braces were suitable.
